Sound like the leader they already picture.

Leadership communication, practised out loud: say no upward, hold the standard with your team, make your case for the next role. Rehearse with someone who pushes back, then walk in with your first line.

Start with how you sound: one question, 60 seconds. Then rehearse the conversation itself.

Rehearsal brief

Out loud · live

With your VP, Dana

Say no to an executive

Dana wants your team to take on a new integration this quarter on top of the launch.

Your goal: A clear no to doing both, with a trade she agrees to.

Their real worry

Hidden. Ask the right questions and they’ll tell you. Miss it, and you can rewind.

WHAT THEY SAY

“Why is this late?”

WHAT THEY MEAN

Can I still trust your dates?

Rehearse until you can hear it, then answer that.

The conversations that decide how you’re seen

  • Your VP asked for one more project, and you said “sure” with a team already at capacity.
  • The underperformance talk went so gently that Sam didn’t know it was one.
  • You made your promotion case with adjectives, and your manager couldn’t carry it upstairs.
  • Your former peer asked, half joking, “So, do I call you boss now?”

Your 30 days: Lead the conversation

“I can say the hard thing clearly, keep the relationship, and leave every conversation, up, down or in a full room, with a real agreement.”

About 15 minutes a day. Each week ends by replaying day 1, so you hear what changed.

  1. WEEK 1 · DAYS 1–7

    Open and listen

Say what each conversation is for, lead with the point, and hear the pressure underneath what people say.

  2. WEEK 2 · DAYS 8–14

    Manage up

Bring bad news early, find the real concern, and make a case your boss can carry into rooms you’re not in.

  3. WEEK 3 · DAYS 15–21

    Hard calls with your people

Hold the standard with people you lead, including the ones who used to be your peers, when they push back hard.

  4. WEEK 4 · DAYS 22–30

    Lead the room

Take the whole toolkit into full rooms: hard news, skeptical executives, quiet experts and hostile questions.

Two more you’ll rehearse

Each person has a reason for pushing back that they won’t say out loud. Find it and the conversation turns.
  1. The underperformance talk

Hold the standard, keep the person. With a senior engineer on your team, Sam.

Their real worry: you’ll have to find it.

  2. Make your promotion case

Ask for the title with evidence. With your manager, Chris.

Their real worry: you’ll have to find it.

Questions

Is my voice recorded?

We never store your recordings. How you sound (pace, pauses, pitch, loudness) is measured on your device. In rehearsals, your words are transcribed and sent to our AI provider to play the other person. We keep your scores and short summaries, not your voice.

I’m a new manager. Is this too advanced?

No. Week 1 starts with the basics: say what a conversation is for, lead with the point, and listen for the pressure underneath. The rooms get harder as you go.

How long does it take each day?

About 15 minutes: one idea, a short drill, one live conversation, and one thing to try at work that day.

Start with 60 seconds.

One question out loud. Your pace, your ums, how fast you start.
