Rehearsal brief

Out loud · live

With the in-house recruiter at a fintech company, Daniel Okafor

“We can do $118,000”

You’ve made it through five rounds for a senior analyst role, and Daniel calls with a verbal offer of $118,000 base. You earn $112,000 now, and your research puts the role between $125,000 and $135,000.

Your goal: A better total offer, ideally $130,000 base or its equivalent, confirmed in writing.

Their real worry

Hidden. Ask the right questions and they’ll tell you. Miss it, and you can rewind.

WHAT THEY SAY

“That’s the top of the band.”

WHAT THEY MEAN

There’s room. Give me a reason.

Rehearse until you can hear it, then answer that.

Asking is normal

In a field study of more than 3,100 tech job seekers, the main reason people didn’t negotiate was believing the employer wasn’t open to it. When they were told companies expect it, more of them countered, and they were paid more.

The number you wish you’d said

  • They said $118,000, and you said “that works” before you’d taken a breath.
  • You lowballed yourself on the first call and have been stuck with it since.
  • Your manager said “my hands are tied this year”, and you said you understood.
  • The client asked for a discount to renew, and you gave it for nothing in return.

Your 30 days: Hold your number

“I walk in knowing my walk-away, say my number first, trade instead of caving, and leave with the deal confirmed in writing.”

About 15 minutes a day. Each week ends by replaying day 1, so you hear what changed.

  1. WEEK 1 · DAYS 1–7

    Prepare

Measure where you start, know your walk-away option, and find out what the other side actually needs.

  2. WEEK 2 · DAYS 8–14

    Anchor and trade

Name your number first with a reason, and make every concession a trade.

  3. WEEK 3 · DAYS 15–21

    Hold under pressure

Stay calm through silence, deadlines and take-it-or-leave-it, and keep what you’ve earned.

  4. WEEK 4 · DAYS 22–30

    Close and confirm

Lead the whole negotiation from the opening frame to a written agreement, and prove it on the tough version of day 1.

Two more you’ll rehearse

Each person has a reason for pushing back that they won’t say out loud. Find it and the conversation turns.
  1. “My hands are tied this year”

A raise when the budget is frozen. With your manager, Siobhan Gallagher, Head of Customer Success.

Their real worry: you’ll have to find it.

  2. “Our budget is $85 an hour”

Hold your rate as a freelancer. With the head of product at a health-tech startup, Mei-Lin Zhou.

Their real worry: you’ll have to find it.

Questions

Is my voice recorded?

We never store your recordings. How you sound (pace, pauses, pitch, loudness) is measured on your device. In rehearsals, your words are transcribed and sent to our AI provider to play the other person. We keep your scores and short summaries, not your voice.

What if they pull the offer?

A polite counter with a reason is a normal part of hiring. The rehearsal lets you practise saying it calmly, and hear what the other side says back, before it’s real.

Is it only for salary?

No. The Negotiation track also covers raises, freelance rates, contract renewals and suppliers.

Start with 60 seconds.

One question out loud. Your pace, your ums, how fast you start.
